Ingredients

For the Simple Syrup
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Adds sweetness for the simple syrup; substitute with honey or agave syrup for a unique twist.
  • ½ cup Mint Leaves Provides a refreshing aromatic flavor; fresh mint is best for bright taste.
  • 1 cup Water Essential for creating the simple syrup and dissolving the sugar.
For the Drink
  • cups Blackberries The main flavor component; feel free to swap with other berries like strawberries or raspberries.
  • ¼ cup Lime Juice Imparts a zesty tang that balances the sweetness; freshly squeezed delivers the best flavor.
  • cups Sparkling Water Adds effervescence and lightness; tonic water or lemon-lime soda can enhance the flavor.
Garnishes
  • Fresh Blackberries Adds a pop of color and extra flavor on top.
  • Additional Mint Leaves A lovely finishing touch that invites freshness and aroma.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • mixing bowl
  • fork or potato masher
  • tall glass

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, ½ cup of crushed mint leaves, and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring continuously until the sugar has completely dissolved, about 3-5 minutes. Once the mixture is clear, remove it from heat and let it cool completely.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add 1½ cups of fresh blackberries along with 2 teaspoons of sugar and ¼ cup of freshly squeezed lime juice. Using a fork or a potato masher, gently mash the blackberries until well combined, leaving a few chunky bits for texture.
  3. Grab a tall glass and layer a few tablespoons of the blackberry mixture at the bottom. Pour in approximately ¼ cup of the mint simple syrup, allowing it to blend with the berries. Then, carefully add about 2½ cups of sparkling water.
  4. Garnish with fresh blackberries, lime slices, and additional mint leaves. Fill the glass with ice before serving.
