Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 large egg Binds the dough for the perfect structure.
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence Adds a delightful flavor; try substituting with almond extract for a unique twist.
  • 1 cup plain flour Provides the essential base; consider gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter Adds rich flavor; coconut oil can be used for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 cup water Hydrates the dough, ensuring it comes together nicely.
  • 2 tbsp sugar Sweetens the dough; coconut sugar makes a lower-calorie substitute.
  • 1 tsp salt Balances sweetness and enhances all the flavors in the bites.
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon powder Gives that classic churro taste; freshly ground cinnamon elevates the flavor even more.
For the Coating
  • 1 cup white sugar A must for that sweet crunch; opt for a sugar alternative for a healthier option.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • piping bag
  • Medium saucepan

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat. Gradually stir in 1 cup of plain flour and mix until a dough forms.
  2. Remove from heat and let the dough cool for about 4-5 minutes. Mix in 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence with a spatula until smooth.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes. Spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray.
  4. Transfer dough into a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe bite-sized pieces into the air fryer basket, leaving space between each churro.
  5. Lightly brush churro bites with melted butter. Cook in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes, checking for golden brown color.
  6. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of white sugar with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder. Toss churro bites in the mixture until evenly coated.
  7. Serve warm churro bites immediately, perhaps with a dipping sauce.
