Ingredients
  

For the Patty
  • 1 pound Ground Beef or lean turkey or plant-based substitute
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce optional for simpler flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper
For the Caramelized Onions
  • 1 medium Onion red or yellow
  • 1 tablespoon Red Wine Vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or olive oil
For the Sandwich
  • 4 slices Rye Bread or sourdough or French bread
  • 1 slice Cheddar Cheese or pepper jack
  • 1 slice Muenster Cheese or Swiss or American cheese
For the Burger Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Mayonnaise or Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon Dill Pickle Relish adjust based on preference
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard Dijon for a more sophisticated taste
  • 1 tablespoon Ketchup adjust for sweetness

Method
 

Step 1: Prepare the Burger Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, ketchup, and mustard until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes.
Step 2: Caramelize the Onions
  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat, add onions, Worcestershire sauce, and red wine vinegar. Cook for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
Step 3: Form the Beef Patties
  1. Shape ground beef into two patties, season generously with salt and pepper. Optionally drizzle with Worcestershire sauce and mustard.
Step 4: Cook the Beef Patties
  1. Cook patties in a hot skillet for about 4 minutes on each side or until medium-well.
Step 5: Assemble the Patty Melt
  1. Butter one side of bread slices, then layer with cheese, caramelized onions, beef patty, and more cheese. Top with another slice of bread.
Step 6: Grill the Sandwich
  1. Grill the sandwiches over medium heat for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and the cheese melts.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
  1. Let the sandwiches cool for a minute before slicing in half, serve with your favorite sides.
